Kurzbeschreibung Forschungsvorhaben Informationsüberlastung:

In the year 2017 most people are working with the help of information and communication technology (ICT), with a still rising rate of workplaces being equipped with new technology. More and more people are presumed to act efficiently with new ICT and services in an environment that is getting more multifaceted for employees in the communication process. In response to the quickly changing environments, individuals and organisations are suffering from information overload (IO).

Within IO research, scientists have not yet agreed upon a common understanding of IO and the related factors which influence it. Some models exist and several causes of IO are mentioned in the literature, but most of the models deliver just a fragmented view of the topic, or they offer no opportunity to test IO causes. Because a suitable model was I established a new one, based on the two dimensions from Tushman and Nadler: information processing capacity (IPC) and information processing requirements (IPR). This model considers the different influence factors and serves as a possibility to test different IO causes.

Furthermore, the extensive literature review detected a gap of motivation related research within the possible causes of IO. Consequently, the planed research tests the effects of motivation on parts of the developed model. The empiric analysis so far supports the conclusion that there is a relationship between individual barriers and IO. Apart from the causes of IO the planed research will also analyse the countermeasures of individuals to avoid stress as a result of overload.

Erwartete Arbeitsergebnisse: Innerhalb des nächsten Jahres (bis Juni 2018) möchte ich folgende zwei Forschungsfragen erarbeiten:

• Forschungsfrage 1: Was sind die Effekte der Variable Motivation auf die Informationsbearbeitungskapazität von Wissensarbeitern?

• Forschungsfrage 3: Was wünschen/ benötigen Wissensarbeiter um Stress in Folge von Überlastung zu vermeiden, welche durch Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien entsteht?

Mögliche Bezugspunkte zu Freiem Wissen und Open Science: Wie bereits im Motivationsschreiben erwähnt betrachtet meine Arbeit verschiedene Aspekte und Forschungsgebiete. Da es sich bisher vor allem um Grundlagenarbeit handelt würde ich gerne viel offener in einen Austausch über Methoden und Erkenntnisse treten. Ich sehe deshalb vor allem Bezugspunkte zu den von Ihnen erwähnten Teilgebieten: offenen und kollaborative Methoden (Open Methodology), offenes Publizieren (Open Access) und offene Materialien (Open Educational Resources). Ferner kann ich mir auch eine Open Discussion vorstellen, in welcher die Teilnehmer aus verschiedenen Disziplinen Ihre Sichtweisen austauschen.
